The Bering Strait: A Decade and a Half of Expeditionary Crossings
Since the late 1980s, the Bering Strait has attracted the attention of expeditionary groups. Over the years, this waterway has been explored on skis, all-terrain vehicles, jeeps, kayaks, and simply by swimming.

French Baron Arnaud de Rosnay crosses the strait on a windsurf.

American Lynn Cox swims from Kruzenshtern Island to Ratmanov Island (4,160 m)
Traditional leather kayaks
1989
The Pilliken expedition, led by Sergei Frolov, travels from the USSR to the USA and back in three traditional, hand-made leather kayaks.

1989
The Soviet-American Bering Bridge Expedition, led by Dmitry Shparo and Paul Schurke, skis more than 1,200 miles from Anadyr to Kotzebue.

1998
Dmitry and Matvey Shparo cross the strait on skis. They covered over 300 km in 20 days. Neither broken ice, nor open water, nor a polar bear that tore their tent apart one night stopped the heroes.

Briton Steve Burgess and German Dan Evans swim across the channel in a Land Rover Defender equipped with float tubes.

Swede Frederik Paulsen and Frenchman François Bernard cross the Bering Strait on a motor hang glider.

Russians Evgeny Novozheev and Konstantin Aksenov cross the Bering Strait on kites.

An international relay team led by Oleg Dokuchaev swims across the strait without wetsuits. Participants swim around the clock, taking turns every 10–20 minutes.

2019
British explorer James Ketchell became the first person to circumnavigate the globe in an open-cockpit gyrocopter. The route took him over the Bering Strait.

Who's next?
A new chapter in the history of the Bering Strait is opening. Initiatives from travelers from around the world are uniting under the auspices of the Bering Strait Festival, whose goal is to establish a regular tourist route between the continents.

On July 18-19, 2026, tour operators and travelers will gather in Anadyr to formulate plans for new expeditions.

Is it possible to cross the Bering Strait today?
The annual Bering Strait Festival aims to create favorable conditions for travelers from around the world to comfortably visit Chukotka and subsequently cross the Bering Strait.
Travel is possible only if the following conditions are met:
  • OBTAINING PERMITS
    Availability of the necessary permits for staying in the Russian Federation and the United States – visas and approvals.
  • TECHNICAL READINESS
    Selection of a crossing means and timely delivery of the necessary equipment to the starting point
  • ENSURING SECURITY
    Participants in the crossing are solely responsible for safety in the waters of the Bering Strait.
